A Silent Auction of Art.

March 3, 2010

Hello. Today I am going to talk about a silent auction that I attended and how it worked.
I got out of the car at the parking lot where the auction was going to happen. I did not know exactly the room or building that hosted the auction. Then I saw some individuals getting out of one car and walking towards one of the buildings. I asked them if they were going to the auction and they said yes. Once inside, they signed a guest book.  A lady was handing some paper with the list of artists, curriculum vitae,   artwork and  reference number. There was a table with some booklets and business cards from the artists who donated their artwork. A ramp communicated to the main room through a hallway. There were some paintings hanging there. Below each painting there was a clipboard with information about the art piece. It contained minimum bid, bid increment and actual market value, also a form in which the bidders (art collectors) would write their names and their offer.  After the hallway I found the main room full of paintings, and  two tables, one with food and the other one with soft drinks and Bacardi rum. It was a nice occasion to socialize with fellow artists and art collectors.

The organizer of the auction made a presentation highlighting personal anecdotes about his experiences in collecting art, and said that as an investor his best and most valued inversion was in art. I myself can not stop thinking about the advantages of collecting art. Easy to keep, enjoyable,  portable, enhances the living space, makes a terrific present, can be traded, bartered, sold etc with almost no legal implications.

The silent auction is not as silent as its name states. In reality people talk, and they talk a lot.  A silent auction is one in which bidders silently post their bids in a piece of paper, below the artwork or artworks of their interest. That, gives people opportunity   to talk,  meet friends,  artists, art collectors, and art dealers.

I met the winning bidder of one painting that I made. It was the person I asked if they were going to the auction.

How to Make a Rubber Latex Mold for a Sculpture (part 1)

January 6, 2010

Tips

  • 1- Buy materials from a manufacturer with good reputation. The quality of material may make the process a pleasurable or frustrating experience.
  • 2- Some materials have a limited shelf life. Better buy what you need and use it as soon as possible.
  • 3- Always read the Manufactures Safety Data Sheet and Instructions. Since every material from even the same manufacturers behave differently.
  • 4- Always do a test job. Three reasons: 1- Check if the material has not expired. 2- Test if the material meets your expectations. .3. Get acquainted with the behavior of the material
  • 5- Plan ahead before starting the process. That will make you save time materials money and frustration.. Some pieces, (unless it is a valuable original) may need to be cut and later reassembled to make the process easier or more effective or just possible.
  • 6- Consider hiring a professional if the budget allows it. It may prove the extra cost.

Reasons why you may want to make a mold and reproduction of a piece of art:

  • 1- You have a valuable original that you want to display with pride, but at the same time want to keep it in a safer place while displaying a copy that looks just like the original. Museums and other institutions just do that.
  • 2- You want to make presents.
  • 3-You want to start a business and you either own the copyright or have an agreement with the copyright holder.
  • 4- You want to restore an object or building to its original state and need to repilcate some textures or detail.

Why Blue?

December 29, 2009

Blue is the color of the sky. It is the color of the infinite, since objects seen from a great distance seem to be blue. It is the color of the balance of the energies. The total absence of light is Black. White is the color of light as it comes from the Sun. White can be decomposed in many of the colors of the spectrum when a prism deflects it. White is considered the sum of all the color of the spectrum. Black is considered the absence of light and the absence of any color. A rainbow is the best example of the white light of the sun being decomposed by the tiny drops of water floating in the atmosphere into the many colors of the spectrum. It is one of the most beautiful effects of the physics of color.

Why is the sky blue?
Short answer: Because is Blue!. 🙂
Long Answer: When the total darkness (Black) of the unquantifiable space of the cosmos mixes with the blinding (White) light of the sun, that combination produces the Blue of the sky. In nature colors (made of light) mix in a different way to the colors in an artists palette (which are made of solid grounded pigments). No wonder white and black produces gray or bluish gray in a palette.

The symbol of Yin and Yang reflects the two opposite forces trying to balance, that is why is painted in black and white. Blue is the representation of those two opposite forces in a perfect mix. No wonder blue is the favorite color to represent the skin color of many Indian deities.

Every color in nature has its own value and need. But blue is the color of greatness. Even the vast ocean seems blue under the blue sky when there is good weather.

If somebody says that blue has any negative connotation, that person needs to enlighten his dark mind with the light of knowledge and wisdom.

The Creator has given the maximum of blue to nature: Sky, rivers, ocean, lakes.

Best Wishes and Happy White and Blue Christmas and New Year

What is art?

December 21, 2009

Art is the confirmation of the words in Genesis 1:26-27  that tell us We are creators,  just like Him, The Creator.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
